All week, I was in the house, tapping away on my computer. When I did go out, it was only to go to school (obviously). Even though I love surfing the Web and playing computer games, it started to get it a bit boring just hitting American cities' names into the Google box and looking at the Seattle artworks on my memory stick.
So yesterday, I went out to go to the park, along with my sister. At the pond, there were lots of different kinds of birds: pigeons, geese, moorhens, coots, and my most favorite aquatic birds of all: DUCKS!
We had brought some brown bread with us (apparently white bread isn't good for them). We dropped some on the floor, and the ducks gobbled it up, quacking happily. Unfortunately the geese, pigeons and other birds would come for the bread and snatch it - thieves!
Then I had a GREAT idea. We would give the ducks names. No, not city names, but people names. We got six ducks, three girls and three boys. We named the girls Amalie, Chenoa and Vee Vee, and the boys Demetrius, Samuel and Edwin. I took a photo with my sister's mobile phone with all the boys in it, but I couldn't get all the girls into one photo, so I had to take one photo for each one.
Now time for some American fun...
In the city of Memphis, Tennessee, USA, there is a five-star hotel, named the Peabody. On the rooftop, five ducks (four girls and one boy) make their home. Every morning at 11 o'clock, they go down in the lift (or, as American Boys say it, elevator) and the "Daily Duck Parade" is held, with marching music, cameras flashing and people of all ages going mad, shouting "YAY!! DUCKS OF MEMPHIS!!!!" A red carpet is rolled out for them, leading up to the fountain, where they splash around joyfully. Then at 5 PM, it goes the other way round. The same music is played, and the screaming crowds and flashing cameras are still present, but this time the ducks go back into the lift up to their "Duck Palace" on the rooftop.
The TV show,
The Ducks of Memphis, was inspired by this unusual but charming custom.
Back to London...
Three ducklings behind Amalie caught my eye. I thought, "Wait a minute. Amalie has kids?" They looked so cute, I wanted to take a photo of them! So I did. I liked how they were following her. I haven't come up with names for them yet, but with some of work of my imagination, I'll come up with some soon.
Because ducks are my favorite aquatic birds, I took LOTS of photos - I even took some of the geese and pigeons!
After all that, I went to a barbecue at a friends' house - it was fun! I was SO tired afterwards.
Now, every time I go to feed the ducks, I'll call them Amalie, Chenoa, Vee Vee, Demetrius, Samuel and Edwin!
